Weds 16th / Thurs 17th - Making up for the blogless week

After Tuesday's post and now two more days, hopefully this will make up for the lengthy break in the postings.

Gerry, back from holiday, has taken a good selection of photos for Wednesday - many thanks Gerry.

Wednesday

The Upholstery team with Eve, Laura and Chris busy re-covering another bench seat from BSK 35308.

Laura looks to be making more spectacle cases.

The under window panel repairs on TSO 4867 have now moved round to the Malvern side of the coach.

Nick in the process of doing the repairs.

Rex and Bryan are reviewing the situation with the internal window framing .........

........ and later fitting the various sections in place.

Simon and Mick are rebuilding parts of 4867's floor.

Also woodworking is Jim, who is making joints for the Mink D's doors.

John is cleaning up and preparing this wheelset for use.

Bob is calibrating the weed spraying equipment ready for retrying on Monday.

Thursday

The completed bench seat in Upholstery ready for fitting.

Another pile of hardwood cut to make more internal window frames for TSO 4867. Reference the two comments at the end of Tuesday's posting, there is very little wastage from each hardwood plank. The remaining offcuts on the right of what will be the bottom window frame sections, will each be used to make two window frame side pieces. So there is very little wastage off each plank. We always plan to minimize waste and recycle where we can.

TSO 4406 was again pushed partly into the Barn to enable Alan to resume his metalwork repairs.

The large panel under the Cotswold side south toilet window has been cut out.

Looking quite drastic with the removed section placed nearby.

Returning at the end of the day to find a large piece of sheet metal lightly tack welded in place.

The little BR freight is back in place in the goods yard.

Richard II cleans the batteries retrieved from FK 13337 "Gillian", which is currently stored out of use.

Now into the Paintshop to continue the progress with SK 25451. Graham took on the keying of the light grey base coat on the Malvern side. He later moved round to the other side, starting at the north end as I was on the scaffold tower at the south end.

Martin, having marked out the line positions at the north end section and door on the Malvern side, applies the yellow Tesa tape.

The first colour goes on with the cream undercoat.

At the south end Tim continues the filling and sanding. The basic paintwork still needs an overall flatting.

Some corrosion at the base of the U section needed some fibre paste. Tim has topped this up with ordinary filler and is now sanding this down, a somewhat awkward job with the base bolts in the way.

A quick check of the roof to see how Phil had done with cleaning up the centre section - it looks to be good, as does the Cotswold side of the roof. The latter had been started while I was away and finished by Richard on Tuesday.

So, painting can begin on the Cotswold side and a new tin of Light Grey MIO opened, but first a very good stir is needed.

Although Richard had vacuumed the roof, it still needed a wipe over with Thinners. Then on with the first coat of MIO using a roller for the main surface and brush for the gutter section.

So, a good start, but quite a way to go to the north end.

Being somewhat busy I missed most of the trains, but managed to capture the Black 5 with the last run of the day.

  1. Well. Firstly, I hope you enjoyed your holiday. Not much to read on the blog fronts with Jo being away too, not much from the Broadway front. He did do an interim report though. yhat was much appreciated. bur now you have returned, we see that 25451 is coming along, and looks so much better with a smattering of colour. There other vehicles also, like refurbished seating for 35308, and the Mink D getting the doors progressed. I have been busy in my garden, having totally resided and roofed my shed 2 wirh tonge and groove and then ashfelted the roof. Much more sturdy now. Also installed garden lights and it truly looks like Blackpool now when the darkness triggers the lights to come on automatically!
Regards as always to you all, Paul.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  2. Glad to hear that there are plans for the offcuts (to make window frame side pieces); although I was more curious than worried, as I was aware that most everyone on the GWSR seems to be _very_ cautious with their pennies. (Unlike a certain other line I could name, which seems to be in some heavy water as a result.)

  4. I regularly look at this blog and admire the fantastic work everyone does, the lovely MK 1's how they are turned out after extensive overhaul, but you then have no cover for them. Are there long term plans for a carriage shed ?
