Our Workshops

Our workshops are located in the goods yard at Winchcombe station. We are lucky enough to have extensive facilities allowing us to cover virtually all aspects of restoration in house. We have three main buildings where we work that covers the vast majority of what we do.

The Barn

The Barn was built in 2003 and extended in 2019 to allow it to become fully enclosed with roller shutters. The main through road often houses a coach in the beginning of its restoration journey or a coach in for quick repairs. The jack road on the right allows a coach to be completely lifted off its bogies thanks to 4 heavy duty jacks (yellow) and allows bogies to be completely overhauled, wheel sets swapped out and ride heights and suspension adjusted.

 The Workshop

This is the original brick-built goods shed that survived the closure of the line. It has been used by Carriage & Wagon since 1991, after a lot of hard work restoring the building itself from its abandoned state when the railway first arrived at Winchcombe in 1987. It is now sandwiched between the barn and paintshop. This is where most of the major body work is done. There is ample space for all our various metal working machinery in what used to be a second road for vehicles, before we had the luxuries of the newer buildings. A carriage and a wagon can be accommodated here.

The Paintshop

This space is also big enough to hold a carriage and a wagon, plus some trestles for painting of other bits and pieces at the end. As well as coach painting, often a carriage is brought straight in here if it is to only receive minor body repairs first. On the other side of the wall to the left is the changing room and the woodwork shop, and upstairs the upholstery shop and mess room. The paintshop was opened in 2014 funded by a generous legacy from Bill Ellesmere, a former volunteer guard. You can find more out about how you can leave a legacy to the railway here.

Within the larger paintshop building, there is also our comprehensive woodwork shop, a generously proportioned upholstery workshop upstairs, along with office, store room and most importantly the tea room!
