Tuesday 5th - Roundels

I've been putting off doing this for a little while, but no longer! Time to get the big saucer of water out for the big roundel transfer. Yes it's just like the RAF roundels you put on your 1:72 Spitfire, but quite a lot bigger! Thanks to Jamie at the GCR for a few tips on using these, and the original recommendation of supplier. The first one was to use an upturned bin lid to soak the transfer, a perfect fit!

The second was to spray the cleaned surface with water. I also roughly marked out the position with tape:

It's a two person job to slide them off the paper, Richard stepped up to help. After a bit of fiddling, done!

Phew! Not as tricky as I thought in the end, if you're careful you can nudge the transfer around quite a bit after you slide it on, just as well as my first attempt was rather wonky to begin with.

Elsewhere Phil took on the second coat of varnish on the cab ends:

While Keith tackled the red bufferbeam.

Good progress on the Toad today as well, Clive went round cleaning up some of the underframe:

Later on we did the axleboxes too, although not intended to be a runner we don't want to knacker the journals while shunting it around.

Maurice was on grey top coating duties:

While Alan had the white out for the handrails:

Finally Ainsley slaving away on CK doors again, here chiselling out the door liner for the budget lock:

And lastly I popped in on Wednesday to allocate the Toad to Gloucester for restricted use:

  3. Yes. It sure beats putting a transfer on in 7mm scale. VERY well done with that.
I also agree that the toad's location is very apt. - Great work.

    1. Yes, for a moment we had finally got agreement to drop the GWSR branding, and go heritage at last. I guess a DMU is a half-way house.
Look at it this way: Would you put a GWSR branded sticker on a loco? Surely not.
Then why on the carriages? It's not right for a heritage railway.
