Weds 29th / Thurs 30th - A good end to the month

Another two day posting covering the end of November with a variety of work and a lot of good progress.

Wednesday

Thanks go to Nick for Wednesday's photos.

A request for our Matelworking team was for some sheet metal disks to fix underneath carriage roof cowls if persistent leaking occurred. These were created by Rex, who then took them to the Paintshop the next day for painting.

Our much used metal saw in action.

No wonder Steve looks happy. The Metalwork Team have made a great job of the repairs so far to both ends of FK 13326.

Phil will be working on more of the electrical installation in RBr 1675, but something has tickled him!

You could think of a dozen funny captions for this photo! Simon and Geoff woodworking inside 1675 and no doubt doing a good job.

Ben looks as if he has completed his job on this door and is getting ready to return to the Door/Woodwork Shop.

Thursday

Tool Van 92 is really coming together now with the roof work nearing completion. Steven and Chris are now fixing the new glass panes to the skylight frames.

Despite our best efforts back in 2009 the old metal roof construct made it difficult to prevent leaks. The new construct is many times better and will keep the inside dry.

Maurice paints the new roof end sections in the red top coat.

Climbing into RBr 1675 to view the new window frames on the Malvern side .....................

.................. and the window panes being reinstated on the Cotswold side.

Rex carefully unwraps another pane, while the two on the bench wait to be thoroughly cleaned.

Preparing the rubber seal with the special cutters which enable the correct corner angle to be cut.

Rex turns over this pane, before he and Gerry set to with the cleaning agents.

Up on the mezzanine Richard II is checking the layout of 1675's new 230 volt system.

The internal components, still to be wired up.

The new container for the 230 volt system. Above is the control panel for the completed 24 volt system.

Derek points out the area of corrosion on the crossbearer at the south end of FK 13326. Options are being discussed, but is likely that most of the toilet compartment will have to be dismantled to enable complete repairs.

Stu joins in the discussion with Derek as to where to begin the job.

Stu was working his way along the Maroon Rake, currently stabled in Platform 2 for the Santa Season, replacing the bushes for the piston rods in the vacuum cylinders. Most are not sealing properly, which in turn will destroy the vacuum and cause the brakes to come on.

With the new bush in place Stu screws the piston rod back into the cylinder.

This gaitor has definitely had it; time for a replacement.

We love this tree, which makes a great compliment to the Usk Goods Office and display wagons, especially now in its autumn colours. Or, considering its age, should it be the other way round, that the goods platform scene compliments the tree?!

The two parts of the door width gauge that has been made by the Woodwork Team to help when having to recreate a doorway following the rebuilding of the surrounding bodywork.

Finally, the latest on the NYMR SK 25488. With the top coating on the Cotswold side now completed, Martin removes the lower line tape.

On the Malvern side Phil tapes up the lower line to enable the yellow band to be painted.

With both lines cleared of tape on the Cotswold side, Martin top coats the corridor connection slider at the north end of the coach.

Very nicely painted! I later added gloss black to the left side of the connection.

Phil progressing well with the second coat of yellow. We always give the yellow band two coats to give a good depth to the colour, applying the second when the first coat is becoming tacky.

Job done. Now most importantly, get the tape off.

It's looking good. Just the black band to paint on both top and bottom lines and that's the Malvern side painting completed. Varnishing follows.

Meanwhile I got the replacement central step attached and Maurice now gives it a coat of black gloss.

The almost completed north end.

  1. 1675 is looking really exciting! I might even reapply to RCS to work on it!
