Tuesday 6th - Painters Day

Tuesday was often referred to as Painters Day as it had been the main one for this activity  since it became one of our work days. Over time attendances have changed and as such it now also includes woodworking and doors, with occasional other activities depending on who comes in.

Today most of the activity was centred around the Santa coach, to the point where if any more of the Painting Team had appeared we would have expanded to the Model Railway coach in Platform 2 Bay, which is now in desperate need of a repaint.

After the obligatory early cuppa for those in early, we got cracking. By about 0930 I thought I had better start the photos.

0935:  Maurice tackled the north end where quite a bit of filling had been done. So it was a case of completing any remaining sanding and then getting on with the undercoating.

0949 : It was good to see both Keith and Roger back. Not much trestle work for Keith. but certainly plenty to do with the bogies, which being under a static coach, have very little in the way of grease and oil to have to worry about. As such a good brushing and wipe over with White Spirit, soon had this side ready for further painting.

1021 : Alex got going on the first top coat on the Cotswold side. What a joy to see the livery coats going on.

1157 : On the Malvern side Pam wipes over the area where I have just added the lining out tape. What we hadn't noticed in all our prep work was that both lines on this (the public) side had been positioned lower than normal to avoid the window panels and rivets. Certainly some sense in that, but being doggedly obstinate as we are, we decided to position the lines where they should be. Should make lining out interesting!

1158 : By now we really were in full flow, with Alan adding Gloss Black to the sole bar and working around Alex, who by now was approaching the centre of the coach with the cream top coating. The panelled centre door made a good stopping point.

1228 : At the south end on the Malvern side, Ian cleaned up the buffer and surrounding area, and then applied Red Oxide.

1240 : On to something completely different now. The Railway will be opening a shop on Broadway station and as such we are now able to use a number of the shelf units that have been stored away. As requested Robert has cut this one in half and done a very good job with the repair.

1241 : Keith and Roger are doing a very thorough job with the bogie, leaving just the coil springs and axlebox covers to paint next time.

1258 : The lunchtime bell will be going very shortly, but Pam is now well stuck into undercoating the north end panels. My application of the two lining out tapes hasn't got very far!

1425 : Now well into the afternoon and Pam has progressed on to the lower panel with the Undercoat Madder.

1425 : It's lovely seeing all the mish-mass of filler, oxide and old paint disappearing as the undercoat Dark Grey goes on, and Maurice is doing a great job applying it.

1425 : That's it, black work done and time for a well earned rest. The rest of the north end bogie painting on this side will be done next time.

1426 : Now on to 1675 where Robert is sizing up the next door liner.

1426 :  On the Malvern side Ainsley is reaming out holes for securing this particular door hinge.

1426 : Back to Robert who is now planing down the door liner to the required thickness.

1450 : Didn't watch many trains today, so it was nice to capture the two together, with the signalman on the platform ready for the token exchange.

1728 : With just five of us left, time to begin packing up for the day. So an all round quick view of the Santa coach before getting changed and adjourning to the Mess room for that final cuppa before going home. Including the work done by Robert and Ainsley, it was overall a very satisfying day with a lot achieved.

The Cotswold side with the first top coat completed and the north end bogie looking good.

The north end now fully undercoated, leaving just the interior of the corridor connection and the door to do.

The Malvern side part undercoated, with the lining out tapes now about threequarters down the length of the coach.

The south end still with more preparation to do. This was left to allow Alex to begin top coating on the adjacent Cotswold side.
