When Carriage & Wagon became an MPD - Part 1 (2011)

2010, 2011 and 2012 were particularly eventful years for the GWSR. Having suffered several embankment problems at Cheltenham and then a major slip at Gotherington in 2010, we were hoping that would be it. However Chicken Curve had other ideas and, having been worrying our PWay Dept for some time, decided it was time to party. So in January 2011 our railway was in two halves again.

With the Gotherington slip we ran from Toddington to Winchcombe. This time it would be the DMU from Toddington to Laverton and the main trains from Winchcombe to Cheltenham, which meant that the locos would have to be based with us at Carriage and Wagon, turning us into the Motive Power Depot for the Railway. For anyone at Carriage & Wagon who loved steam it was a silver lining to this otherwise very worrying time.

For the adults one special treat was an evening on Elegant Excursions

2011 was an eventful year. Chicken Curve rebuilding was progressing, the Railway's appeal was going extremely well and was on target to achieve a million pounds, and at the end of the year we received the Ian Allan Publishing Heritage Railway of the Year award for the way we tackled the Gotherington and Chicken Curve slips.

In June Carriage & Wagon had put on two successful Open Weekends to help raise funds for the appeal. We had also gained a pit complete with drainage facilities, which would be a bonus to us when things returned to normality.

What would 2012 bring?

For Carriage & Wagon there would be a very big and very welcome surprise.
