Thursday 13th - Almost there
A hearty thanks to Gerry who took almost all of the photos today as I was involved with varnishing 4986.
Up on the Workshop mezzanine Richard II continues the electrical upgrade to the lamps as reported in the post for Thursday 23rd January.
Later both he and Richard I were back working on the electrics in RBr 1675.
Phil was also working on electrics. Carriage connections were being cleaned up and refitted.
Regular readers will know that we are continually refurbishing vacuum cylinders and the associated DA valves in readiness for changing with those under coaches as they are brought into the jack road. Stu has dismantled one of the latter..
Meanwhile under RMB 1876 Tony is working on the DA valve.
Three DA valves are sat on the metalwork bench, presumably awaiting servicing.

Beginning today we have three more working days to complete the partial repaint of SO 4986. The main painting has been completed and the Cotswold side upper section has had its first coat of varnish. Hopefully we can get the rest of this side and the Malvern side varnished today.
The lower half had already been lightly sanded with 240 paper and wiped down. Phil begins adding the first coat of varnish.
I began sanding the Malvern side, later joined by Jeff.
With the sanding completed Jeff wipes down the crimson paintwork.

Now a few photos taken by me during the day.
Jeff begins varnishing the top section at the north end, while I started at south end. Meanwhile Phil had completed the Cotswold side and has begun varnishing the crimson section at the north end.
The line of obstacles to keep everyone away from the drying varnish.
So two days left to make 4986 ready for departure on Thursday 20th. Left to do : a second coat of varnish, paint the sole bar, footboards, door handles, stops and droplight bar, and grab handles. The coach numbers need completing with black borders.
Kevin is doing a great job repairing one of our hardworking trollies.
The springs on the MICA van need changing.
With the one corner jacked up and supported, the first spring has been removed.

Rush, rush, RUSH! Unfortunately, time and tide wait for no man! A fine deadline, but I think you will get there and complete 4986 on time. Maybe with a small amount of time to spare! With all the work that it has had done, it deserves to get there on time, and I wish you all success to that end.
ReplyDeleteWas the changing of a spring on the MICA a surprise, or known about? Looks close to being finished now and will look fantastic in the goods rake.
Regards, Paul.
Sort of known about. We knew all along they weren't fantastic with some rust between the leaves, but initially the decision was they'd be acceptable. We've now decided that we might as well sort them now while we're doing everything else.
