Tuesday 10th - Foggy to clear

It was certainly a day of contasts with a drive in through areas of dense fog, stunning clarity descending Cleeve Hill and finally arriving at a very foggy Winchcombe and Greet.

The yard at 0800.

Just over an hour later P&O emerges from the slowly dispersing fog with the first train of the day to pick up the passengers at Cheltenham RCS.

Beginning today with NYMR SK 25488, Roger works on the Cotswold side north door.

Stu was busy on both sides, filling and sanding initially.

Ian concentrated on the south end - we need to make a start on both ends, especially as the prep work on the sides is progressing well.

Maurice proceeded to undercoat the remaining half of the Malvern side of Tool Van 92 ......

...................... and was soon making very good progress.

Our Works Manager Stu had arrived and, working with our Operations Manager Neil, extracted TSO 5042 from the Barn. It was then made ready to take up to Toddington to rejoin the Main Rake.

They returned later with TSO 4772 from the Main Rake which also needs some attention.

Ainsley was reconstructing a section of door liner from one of the emergency doorways on 1675.

Rod was on the Malvern side of 1675 working on a liner on the central passenger doorway.

Keith applies undercoat brown to five planks to be used for the Monster Van repairs.

Vacuum cylinder V19 being prepared by Alan for painting.

I took over after Alan had left and Rod captured me doing the final bits of cleaning up.

A quick vac to remove the dust, a wipe down with thinners and then a coat of green primer. That chair is very handy for jobs like this.

The day turned out to be nice and sunny, allowing Derek to begin installing on the Monster Van the planks previously painted by Keith. They had dried relatively quickly with the day so warm.

The Cotswold side of the old Army RBr is now almost coated in dark grey. Dave works on the final areas.

Returning to 25488, Pam and I concentrated on the Cotswold side windows, in particular the inner edges, where in places the old sealant could be pulled out easily. Roger also joined in when he had completed working on his door.

Stu patch paints the areas on the Cotswold side where extra filler had been required.

With much of the lower level prep done on the Malvern side, Stu greyed up from the south end to the central door.

Farmer James made good his escape with his Evacuation Experience school party now on the train.

When he did return it was to work on the new North Pole perspex boards that are used during the Santa Special season, which will be here before you know it. His carefully cut sections have been put on the first board and then the new metal brackets made by John S. last week.

Robert looks at the original set of boards.

Locking up at the end of the day. TSO 4772 now up on the jacks ready for maintenance and any repairs.

The Malvern side of Tool Van 92 now fully undercoated. Maurice has made a start on the Cotswold side.

  1. The yard at 8.00am is a very atmospheric scene.
