Meet the Teams - Electrical

THE ELECTRICAL TEAM

                                                     Updated 24th June 2026

Although some of the electrical work will fall under weekly Maintenance, many of the jobs are actually involved with coach refurbishment and a steady programme of improvement.

The Team

Richard Bu. and Richard Ba. whom we fondly nickname Richard II and Richard I. As well as general checking and repairs, they continue to provide a rolling programme of improvements to our coaching stock.

Phil S. who looks after the general electrics during refurbishments such as the lights, intercoach connections and general wiring. In this role he is also part of the Indoor Gang.

Mike is our newest member, joining the team in early 2025 from the South Devon Railway.

Former Members of the Team

Steve S., who was our LED lighting specialist, has now retired. His work to improve our coach lighting has greatly increased the working life of our batteries and means we no longer have to rely on the dynamos to do the charging. Running at 25 mph made charging uncertain, even with methods to try and increase the level of charging.

Sadly we lost Steve when, after a lengthy period away, we heard that he had passed away during February 2026.

Nicole, Richard I's granddaughter, was our youngest member, joining at the end of March 2024. She was only able to attend occasionally with her University career obviously having to take precedence. This has now taken up all her time and as such she has had to resign. It would be lovely to see her back with us one day.

A very good write-up of the work done by Richards I and II was published on 4th March 2021 "Electrics on Mk 1 carriages for GWSR". It has received a large number of very positive comments and is well worth a read.
