Tuesday 3rd - Rapidly coming together

Today's posting is mainly the excellent progress with the Toad brake van with photos from both Richard S. and Paul E., as well as my own. Trying to merge them all and get the correct sequence was not easy, so instead they are simply displayed by photographer as taken throughout the day.

Maurice priming the extracted drawbar gear after it had been cleaned up.

It had all been carefully laid out in the correct order and when the oxide had dried the letters N and S were applied accordingly to ensure it is all put back correctly, as shown below.

There was a lot of undercoating done today. Paul caught Maurice working at the Cotswold side of the veranda.

The Malvern side cabin planking is rapidly building up.

The Malvern side of the van looking very good with the dark grey undercoat.

The Cotswold side with the veranda undercoated and a white board for onward instructions now in use.

One of Robert's jobs today was rebuilding the centre of one of the veranda doors.

A closer view of the new Malvern side cabin planking.

Maurice repainting the north end vacuum pipe with red oxide.

Paul building up the Malvern side cabin planking.

Maurice undercoating the Cotswold side of the veranda (with Richard in the background, I guess Paul used Richard's camera to take this shot)

Now on to my own photos for the day, beginning with yet more on the Toad.

A different view taken about midday of the drawbar gear.

Maurice undercoating the Malvern side of the veranda.

More undercoating, this time the veranda ceiling frame.

The Cotswold side of the cabin.

Robert rebuilding the veranda door shown earlier.

Taken late in the day, Paul primes more planking for the Toad.

On now to more progress with the Bubblecar, though as with all preparation, it never seems to look any different. Phil and Richard are in effect finishing off each section and gradually moving towards the north end. By the end of the day I was able to draw a chalk line from the south end to over half way along, declaring "Prep completed".

Roger and Ian were similarly working on the Malvern side. More will be done on Wednesday and on Thursday more assessment made. Hopefully the paintbrush will be looming large soon - at least with some undercoating where needed.

Keith had plenty to keep him busy, initially tidying up the edges of the headboards and then giving them a second undercoat of cream.

The toilet doors from TK 24006 were given a coat of varnish on the top edges, and then over to the new skirting for CK 16221 to add dark grey undercoat.

Alan worked on another of the luggage racks from the second class part of 16221. They clean up very well and will look fine when back in place . Some repairs to the netting are inevitable of course and will be tackled separately.

Robert consults the timetable to see when the Maroon rake will arrive. An issue with a slightly bent handrail on BSKD 34929 was inspected and a replacement will be instated on Friday. Two spares were cleaned up and painted ready by Keith.

Robert works at the Cotswold side south doorway of 16221 and fits the lower half of the door liner with the locater already inserted.

Ainsley was also in the process of fitting a locater to this section of liner.

The former Quainton Road TSO 4867 has now been relocated close to the Barn and as such is now more readily accessible. Dave took advantage of the warm dry weather and sanded one of the doors. Quite a bit of internal work has been done in the past. A check of the roof has shown it to be in good condition and some work has been done by the Metalwork Team on the south end crash pillars. The coach is scheduled to come into the Works to continue and complete its restoration in October this year; initially this will be the Barn for the metalwork repairs and bogie overhauls.

  2. Brilliant work as always, but the holes in the Toad drawbars look misshapen, are they going to be bushed to accept the new pins being machined?
