Tuesday 11th - Bakers Dozen

Yes, there were 13 of us in and a large variety of jobs were started, a number of which were completed.

CK 16221

Having made a great start last week on getting the base coat of undercoat Light Grey painted on the Cotswold side of the coach, we were very keen to keep up the pace. When it came to the window frames Richard suggested going straight to undercoat Madder. The grey on the bodysides helps with showing up where more filler is needed, whereas the windows we knew were fine.

Meanwhile, with the north half of this side already prepared on Saturday, Stu proceeded to grey up.

At the far end Phil J. worked on the door doing some final rubbing down.

A little later on and the door was almost greyed.

On the Malvern side, Roger was working at the south end, checking for any final bits of sanding and adding, we hope, the final bits of filler.

Returning later in the morning to find Richard on the final window for the south half. The third (emergency) window still requires the seating of its lower frame.

Meanwhile Phil and Stu, having completed their painting, have moved round to the north half of the Malvern side to do the same as Roger. At the end of the day, there were many chalk circles on this side, either indicating filler to sand down or where more was needed. The aim now will be to get this completed and this side greyed up as far as possible. There is still a fair bit of work to do with the reconstruction of the doors and doorways on the coach, but it's a real joy to see some more external progress at last and a great morale boost for everyone.

In the Barn one of the doors off 16221 was given a thorough sanding by Tony to remove all the peeling paint. The history of the coach gradually makes itself  known with a layer of green between the maroon and blue/grey layers. We know this coach ended up in Scotland (hence its new number 7221), but was it on the Southern Region prior to that? The green has been seen all over the coach during its prep work. We are contacting Clive, the owner.

A final shot of 16221 just before packing up for the day. A very heartening sight!

BSK 34929

There were a number of jobs that we were specifically asked to do to help progress 34929. One was to get the toilet compartment painted, which in turn will enable Phil S. to reinstate the toilet, sink and other bits. Alex had primed the new panelling on Saturday, so Maurice took on the undercoating in Cream. The communication cord receptacle was also given a thorough clean - the chain could do with the fresh touch of red too.

Both sides of the heater cover for the toilet compartment were cleaned up by Maurice and given a coating of Silver Hammerite.

Quite a bit going on in the trestle area of the Paintshop. Tony removes the fittings off the back of 34929's toilet door, prior to making some repairs and preparing it for repainting and the edges for revarnishing. In the background Bob is revarnishing the sanded wood top pieces for the compartment seating.

Another essential job was to get the underseat heater grills coated with Silver Hammerite. These were largely done on Saturday and just needed a final bit of finishing off, and are now ready to be put back. This in turn will enable Upholstery to reinstate the seat cushions in the four compartments.

Yet another essential job was to clean up the compartment door runners. The compartment doors are all revarnished and ready to go back once the seating is back in place. In the background are more grab rails from the guards area of the coach which need cleaning up and repainting.

Mentioning the guards compartment and Bob was back in there, masking up around the bases of the seat and brake column ready for painting in undercoat Dark Grey.

The Door Team are currently working on Door 9 from the BSK. Having seen the state of the paintwork we felt it necessary to get this cleaned up before the door ended up on the coach. So after a quick relocate to the Barn, Bob got cracking. However we decided not to grey it up afterwards as we had no wish to impede the rebuild progress. The door was duly returned to the Door Team's bench with an explanatory note.

In the same vein, we have left a note on the door skin currently under repair in the Workshop requesting that we clean it up before being returned to the Door Team.

The corridor end slider for 34929 was given a fresh top coat by Richard. A second one will follow before the door is put back.

Upholstery

In the Upholstery Shop Dave is fitting the hardboard base to a TSO seat.

This is followed by the shaped foam insert.

Prepared pieces of moquette await along with a note.

The lovely note left by Jenny on Saturday.

SK 24006

In the four emptied compartments in 24006, the team were busy once again. Robert finishes off the cleaning up of this particular area of sycamore veneer.

In another compartment Dave was at an earlier stage in the cleaning up with some more vigourous sanding.

In a third compartment Phil B. is removing the top beading in preparation for cleaning up the veneer panelling.

And finally

4270 shuffles past with the first train of the day. One of the smiling faces passing by was Alan Baugh from our Painting Team.

  1. Wow ! Certainly going to it. Lots of progress at a high quality level. It is nice to see 16221 greyed up. The blue grey livery I had to work with on BR was never a friendly looking livery. Well done to you all.
    Regards, Paul.

  2. I never liked the blue/grey, too symbolic of the 'new image' quite apart from being not my taste!....although others love it!

  3. When I saw the picture of Richard kneeling to paint I wondered where all the blue kneelers went that were at Worcester Crematorium. He could do with one to protect his knees.

  4. A terrific job you all do so well.
