Weds 17th / Thurs 18th - Concentration

With just a week to go to Christmas there's no letting up of the pace. We are as busy as ever with the concentration on the priority coaches 1876 and 4798, and the weed spraying wagon.

Wednesday

Gerry wasn't in so was unable to do his normal photo shoot. However Nick was able to get some good photos, and there are also some from Russ, so thank you both.

The weed spraying wagon is now in the process of being undercoated in light grey by Bob. The ordered top coat for the wagon has now arrived.

Rex is undercoating the removable safety rails.

A base for the old fridge is being made to anchor it to the floor of the van.

While Chris works in the background, a lovely photo of our Wednesday Upholstery girls,  Ceri, Eve and Laura, taking a well earned rest.

Inside 1876 Phil began fitting the flying saucer lights, which can be trial to say the least.

Some further cutting out with the multitool was needed.

With the prop holding the fitting in place, Phil has both hands available to restore the bolts.

Regarding the improvements to 1876's servery, the Indoor Gang are on the case. Roger fixes a wider ceiling strip to cater for the loose hanging section.

Alan is making adjustments to the shelves, ensuring they are secure.

Roger and I had a go at further improving the steel walls of the bulkhead with further rubbing with steel wool and 240 grade paper, followed by spraying with WD40.

The Richards are refitting out the two battery boxes.

A new cable is needed for the chiller. Roger lends a hand to pull it through as Richard I slowly feeds it in.

Bob and I got almost all of the sole bar and most of the steps with a fresh coat of gloss black.

Prior to this Bob was top coating the final two ceiling panels in SO 4798.

Ainsley was working again on both sides of 4798, initially treating parts of the Cotswold side south end with more green primer.

He then swapped sides to work again on the repaired south end.

Then all work ceased on 4798, both inside and outside, as the coach was to be shunted into the Barn ready for a change of bogies.

Roger did some sweeping up in the Workshop. Others did the same in the Barn.

The weather forecast was bang on the mark. As the day wore on it got worse.

BSK 35308 replaced 4798 in the Workshop. The south end metalwork repairs have been completed, but a lot of work is still required on the doorways. With the refurbishment of 1876 and 4798 having to take priority, the efforts on 35308 have unfortunately been limited to when staff are available.

With 4798 now in the Barn, Bob was able to complete his ceiling painting and Ainsley returned to his filling and sanding.

Comments

  1. I am guessing that the weed killing wagon is going to be painted yellow. Looking good!
1876 is getting there. It is looking SO good with the UFO lighting.
4798 seems to be dragging its heels, but there is only so much that can be done in a day. With the rush on to finish 1876, I suppose it has to take its place in the queue.
All very good work though. So here's wishing you all a very good Christmas and a Happy New Year.
    Seasonal regards, Paul.

  2. The ad hoc patch repairs on the end of 4798 look to have left it with a very uneven finish, due to them not following the radiused contour of the ends. A far larger, and wider, panel should give a far better finish, as it can flex to follow the contour, and poss' take less time to weld in than the numerous small patches.
