Wednesday 30th - Another day - Another Dogfish

Today we had more volunteers in the Woodwork shop, than in the works. Not a bad thing given a problem had arisen with a door fit on 34929, we were able to have a discussion and a decision was made. By the end of play the problem was sorted.

It seems the Dogfishes are multiplying, as I finished one 2 more appear ..... the story continues.

With Gerry on holiday, Rex joined me in the hopper. It is very difficult (given our age) to get in the right position to weld, especially with our market leading filtered air welding masks. The problem is with the air pump belt on I cannot get close enough to weld, so Rex holds the pump and I go in with just the mask. It is still unpleasant but it gets the job done.

As the title says, it will not end with just 2 Dogfishes, we now have 2 more waiting on the headshunt which will join us in the barn this w/end.

34929
at the top of the door it became obvious the radius was wrong, unfortunately the wood door jamb had been made to fit. It was decided the easier option was to remake the wood bit and and alter the outer metal skin, by fitting a spacer strip. Welded in position it brought the door in near perfect alignment .... Phew!

Ainsley is painstakingly straightening a capping strip, for one of the doors on 34929, its rare stuff and is never thrown away.

Dave and Geoff discussing the dimensions of a new seat base for the TSO 5042 set.
The finished product, just needs building.
Jenny has gone walkabout looking for more seats from 5042.
Ah there they are!

Meanwhile back on 34929, Geoff and Colin are putting the final touches to the disabled access doors and surrounds.
Bryan is adding that gentle touch to another capping strip.
Bryan is now at home on the miller, Ken has given him the job of making a joggler. Whats a joggler I hear you ask. It is two halves of substantial steel, which can crimp a step into sheet metal. This makes a much easier and better finish when fitting outer skin patches. When its finished I will do some pics of what it can do.

16221 is coming along, the corridor connector is fitted and Ken is fitting the rain deflector over the top.

Again 16221, Dave is attending to various small patches which are highlighted in chalk. He remarked it looked as though it has measles.

Robert is making adjustments to door fit on the other side of 34929, its all happening.

The door fit team are doing really well, the finished items are very impressive.

The day goes very quickly, we don't hang around waiting. We have a growing number of in house jobs to do, one still ongoing is having storage brackets and locations for every set of steps and ladders.

Bryan is just clamping into position  the next one, I weld it, a number is allocated and off to the next one.

Another busy day, and as you can see the teams work well together.
