Wednesday 30th A couple of essential jobs
We were tasked to do a couple of essential jobs, the first being to remove a small amount of metal from door 3 on 1808, this being the final piece of the jigsaw.
Once 1808 is finished, it will ease the carriage jam.
The gap between the door and the outer skin was too small, so Gerry B. working on his own of course carefully cut a narrow strip of material. All that is needed is the capping strip fitted, paint and its good to go.
4867 was in need of some TLC on the roof, as always around the water in pipes and vent pipes.
Shown here is a typical example, after a major clean up and surface preparation I made an overlapping plate and fully welded it.
The vent pipe is temporarily in place and may well get a new one eventually.
The other 2 holes I decided were too far along the roof to attend to safely, so again some encouragement with a hammer and scraper I was able to get them back in place. This a temporary fix, so a very sticky mastic came to the rescue.
A before and after, it doesn't look very pretty but it will be watertight for as long as we need it to be. Once we can have it in the workshop, with the correct safety equipment this will be cut out and a fully welded section will go in.Similarly the other vent pipe was dealt with in the same way. With social distancing being paramount for Covid protection, we have to risk assess every job. Gerry B. remained at ground level as my banksman, while I worked up the tower.
Interesting blog. The roofs appear to get in abad state.,good thing you have C and W to fix them.
